World’s first environmentally friendly chilled drinks machine launches in the UK1

An expert in environmental impact of energy use at the University of Surrey has worked with a drinks manufacturer to design the concept of a self-cooling drink can which can be dispensed in the world’s first green friendly free standing drinks machine.
Instead of a refrigerant the new “CHILLCAN”® technology uses activated carbon and carbon dioxide to bring the temperature of the area around the drink to a lower temperature so chilling the liquid inside. The self-chilled can uses carbon dioxide recovered from waste gas at a fraction of the cost of cooling the whole drinks machine.
The novel concept of a drinks machine which does not act like a refrigerator has also been developed to supply the drinks. The chilled drinks will then be at a temperature about 15°C below the ambient.
