Medical Ethics Forum for Vets & Doctors
Monday 11 March 2013
25th March 2013
University of Surrey
Meeting Centre, Leggett Building Manor Park Campus
Guildford GU2 7WG
With the advancement of medicine and veterinary medicine, doctors and vets are increasingly able to improve quality of life or artificially extend life expectancy. However, these technological advances in medicine are now re-focusing both professions on confronting numerous and challenging ethical dilemmas.
For vets, the priority of care is to the animal which may at times bring them into conflict with the pet owners and also business economics. For example, should a suffering animal be euthanased against the wishes of the owner? Conversely, is it acceptable to end a healthy animal's life at the demand of a client?
Doctors may face relatives who insist on life-sustaining treatment for a patient, which the Doctor believes is futile, or discuss the withholding of active treatment with a family. In addition, should they be able to withhold specific information from a patient's family or suggest that a relative donate an organ to a sick relative?
These subjects will be discussed at our first Ethics Forum where in addition, participants will have a chance to speak to us about our new world-class School of Veterinary Medicine which will embrace the 'One Health - One Medicine' philosophy.
