Head of Banking at Santander speaks to Surrey students
Thursday 14 March 2013
Steve Pateman, Executive Director and Head of Banking at Santander UK, gave a lecture to members of the university community about the current threats the UK economy faces and also the future of UK banking.
80 guests including students and academics attended the lecture.
In his address Mr Pateman explored the current state of the banking sector and the impact this is having on the local economy.
After the lecture it was the turn for a Q&A session in which the audience showed a keen interest and good knowledge of the subject.
Professor Vince Emery, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International Relations), observed "Steve Pateman's talk outlined beautifully the complexities underlying the banking crisis in 2008 and provided a candid reminder of the needs for a strong and stable banking sector to ensure economic growth in the UK and globally."
Prior to the lecture Mr. Pateman visited the Santander branch at the University which opened in 2011 and is the only banking facility on campus. He also had a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Sir Christopher Snowden.
The University of Surrey signed an agreement with Santander, through its Santander Universities Global Division in December 2008. Through this agreement the bank provides funding for scholarships, mobility grants, and the encouragement of entrepreneurship, as well as contributions to enhance Surrey’s links with Brazilian universities.
Steve Pateman, Executive Director and Head of Banking, Santander UK, said: “The University of Surrey has been recently ranked number one for graduate employability in the UK. In the current economic climate this is a fantastic achievement. Having met the Vice-Chancellor and the students today I can understand why this university is in such a highly regarded position.”
The event at Surrey is the first in a series of lectures that Steve Pateman has planned for 2013 to give in 10 UK universities.
