Staff and students of the University of Surrey recently had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the latest smart technology. A demo truck showcasing exclusive cutting edge video conferencing technology, smart home equipment and virtual reality gaming was available for one day only for Surrey’s staff and students to experience.

The demo truck had been provided by Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider. So far, in addition to the University of Surrey, the company had taken its European roadshow throughout France, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, Germany and Spain. Visitors to the Huawei demo truck were able to experience first-hand how the company helped its customers and partners restructure their business, operations, IT architecture and network.

The Journey to Digital

Under the theme, “The Journey to Digital” the roadshow maps out the path towards digital transformation, with a key focus on the needs of telecom operators and service providers. Students studying relevant courses were invited to visit, along with staff and students from the entire University.

Huawei is one of the key partners of the University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC). Along with 5GIC, the Chinese global mobile communications company is passionate about building a better connected world. Huawei has invested close to £10 million pounds in academic research in the UK, ranging from 5G, graphene applications and high-speed broadband to data science, 3-D audio and interactive multimedia technology.

The roadshow produced live demonstrations of the latest smart technology products, hands-on activities and competitions, and provided free giveaways. It was also a useful resource for students wishing to pursue a career with the company.

Professor Rahim Tafazolli, Director of the University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre, said:  “This has been an enlightening experience for many people to experience first-hand the kind of cutting edge smart technology that we at the 5GIC work with everyday. We are grateful to Huawei and are delighted to host the roadshow here at the University of Surrey campus.”

The University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) is the world’s largest academic research centre dedicated to next-generation wireless connectivity. It houses over 170 researchers and has attracted over £70 million of investment, including £12 million from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). It brings together leading academic expertise and major industry partners to define and develop a global 5G network that will radically change lives across the world.

Gordon Luo, CEO, Huawei said: “We would like to thank the University of Surrey for giving us the opportunity to bring our roadshow to their Guildford campus. It gives students studying the relevant science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) courses the opportunity to get up close with some of the latest technology and solutions that Huawei is offering. Huawei has now operated in the UK for fifteen years and in that time we have grown to employ 1,100 people across fifteen UK locations and we look forward to continuing to develop our presence alongside partners like the University of Surrey.”

Huawei’s roadshow is travelling Europe to explain how, as a leading company providing customer-centric ICT solutions and services, Huawei is focusing on what its calls the Open ROADS to a Better Connected World – that is, networks that are faster, broader and more ubiquitous, with user experiences that exemplify Real-time, On-demand, All-online, DIY and Social Connectivity (ROADS).
