IOM3 Ceramics Society Mellor Memorial Lecture 2012 (5.30 pm)
"Structural Ceramics for Extreme Environments"
Professor Bill Lee, Department of Materials and Centre for Advanced Structural Ceramics (CASC), Imperial College London

Lecture abstract: The UK retains a strong international profile in the area of structural ceramics in both commercial and university sectors. In the last few years the research efforts in our universities have undergone something of a renaissance with world-leading collaborative programmes examining structural ceramics for a range of applications including in military (personnel and body armour), aerospace (ultra high temperature systems), nuclear (fuels and wasteforms) and medical (bioceramics for bone prostheses) sectors. This lecture will examine, using examples from the author's own work, of current development of structural ceramics for use in the extreme environments of future refractory, aerospace and nuclear applications. It will include consideration of high temperature, corrosive atmosphere and intense radiation flux (and sometimes all three).

The Mellor Memorial Lecture will be followed by a drinks reception and dinner in the Lakeside Restaurant on the University of Surrey campus.
