Industrial Doctorate Centre in Micro- and NanoMaterials and Technologies
Friday 13 March 2009
The Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) has provided £6.2 million to the University of Surrey's Industrial Doctorate Centre (IDC) in Micro- and NanoMaterials and Technologies (MiNMaT).
This will be one of seventeen IDCs nationally and it will provide an innovative and transformative research environment in materials science and engineering.
The focus of the Centre will be the solution of academically challenging and industrially relevant problems, which have at their core the processing-microstructure-property relationships that are the cornerstones of the discipline. A unique feature of the Centre will be the focus on characterisation, including 'hands on' experience, through access to state-of-the-art instrumentation.
The Research Engineers (REs) associated with the Centre will undertake an Engineering Doctorate in MiNMaT. An EngD is awarded for doctoral research carried out in industry and supported by a programme of professional development courses. The programme provides at least the intellectual challenge of a PhD in a framework of experience and courses that prepare REs for rewarding careers in industry. Each RE has an industrial sponsor; typically REs spend about three-quarters of their time working at their sponsors' premises.
