Emeritus Professor Jim Castle named Fellow of the American Vacuum Society
Monday 27 June 2011
Fellowship of AVS recognises members who have made a sustained and outstanding scientific and technical contribution in areas of importance to AVS. The citation reads “For seminal contributions to the fields of surface analysis and corrosion science”. Jim was responsible for the establishment of The Surface Analysis Laboratory at Surrey, the first in a Material Department, in 1970 just as the technique of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was becoming commercially available. Continual re-investment has ensured that the Laboratory is still the best equipped in the UK and highly rated across the world. Since his appointment to an Emeritus post Jim has continued to be active in many areas of surface analysis, taking on Editorship of the journal Surface Science Spectra several years ago.
