STAG'11 is the 5th fastest UK car

Tuesday 19 July 2011

On 13-17 July, a dedicated group of students from Mechanical, Medical and Aerospace Engineering and from Electronic Engineering took part in this year's Formula Student competition, held at Silverstone racetrack. Forming the Surrey University Racing Technology and Engineering Solutions (SURTES) team, the students competed with their newly designed and manufactured Formula Student racing car - the STAG'11. Weighing only 193.5 kg, the Honda CBR600 RR07 powered STAG’11 proved highly competitive and was the 5th fastest UK car in the acceleration event. In torrential rain, the STAG'11 covered the course length of 75 m from a standing start in only 5.256 seconds.

In total, 110 Universities from 31 countries registered this year, making the 2011 Formula Student competition the biggest and most international event yet. The competition is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and, in the most challenging entry category (Class 1), consists of 3 presentations (business, cost and design) and 5 track events (acceleration, skid pad, sprint, endurance and economy). This was Surrey's third year competing in Class 1. In adverse weather conditions, SURTES finished Europe’s biggest student motorsport event at a remarkable 17th position out of 35 UK entries and 39th out of a total of 79 worldwide entries.
