Graduate Samantha Simons wins best paper award at MEDSIP 2012
Friday 13 July 2012
Samantha Simons, a recent graduate of the MEng programme in Medical Engineering of the University of Surrey has won the prize for the best paper presented at the 5th International Conference on Medical Signal & Information Processing (MEDSIP 2012) held in Liverpool on the 5th and 6th of July 2012. The prize was awarded by the IEEE EMBS UKRI Chapter.
Samantha Simons’ paper, “Quadratic Sample Entropy and Multiscale Quadratic Sample Entropy of the Electroencephalogram in Alzheimer’s Disease”, co-written with project supervisor Dr Daniel Abásolo (University of Surrey) and Dr Javier Escudero (Plymouth University), showed that advanced non-linear analysis of the electrical activity of the brain could be a helpful tool for increasing our understanding of changes in the brain caused by Alzheimer’s disease. This pilot research could open the door to early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease using the electroencephalogram, a technique with lower cost than medical imaging, and highlights the emergence of biomedical signal processing at the Centre of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Surrey.
Researchers from several different countries presented their work at MEDSIP 2012 on Physiological Measurement & Analysis, Electrophysiology, Critical/Intensive Care, Medical Imaging and Image Processing, Mathematical and Statistical Modelling, Signal Processing, Telemedicine & E-Health and Health and Safety in Medical Application.
