Monday 18 March 2013

Rita Morgado da Silva, Alex Humphries and Johanna-Marie Best represented the Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences at the IMechE 25th Annual Medical Engineering Student Project Competition that took place at the IMechE Headquarters in London on 28th February 2013.

Rita Morgado da Silva, a final year MEng Mechanical Engineering student, was awarded the JRI prize for Best Poster Presentation for her project work on ”Electroencephalogram Lempel-Ziv Complexity analysis in Alzheimer’s Disease with different Coarse Graining Techniques”, completed under the EPSRC vacation bursary scheme during the Summer of 2012 under the supervision of Dr Daniel Abásolo (University of Surrey).

Alex Humphries, a graduate of the BEng programme in Medical Engineering, and Johanna-Marie Best, a final year MEng Medical Engineering student, were runner-ups for the Vicon Prize for Best Medical Engineering Project.

Alex Humphries presented his BEng final project work on “Modelling laser tattoo removal using Finite Elements to optimise treatment outcomes”, co-supervised by Prof Mike Hughes (University of Surrey) and Mr Tom Lister and Dr Philip Wright (Salisbury District Hospital). Johanna-Marie Best’s entry was on “Analysis of electrocardiogram recordings with advanced non-linear methods for the evaluation of atrial fibrillation organisation”, part of her MEng Final Year Project under the supervision of Dr Daniel Abásolo (University of Surrey).

The students’ success highlights the excellence of research in Medical Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences at the University of Surrey.
