Projects
Our Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering programmes offer the chance to be involved in exciting hands-on practical projects to use the knowledge gained during your studies. These include the Formula Student project, where we produced the UK's 3rd fastest car in the 2009 race. There is also the opportunity to join in the Concorde reconstruction project at the nearby Brooklands museum.
Formula Student
Formula Student is used as a unifying theme for many of the projects and courses in the mechanical and aerospace programme and further information on the current car can be found on the Surrey University Racing Technology and Engineering Solutions (SURTES) site.
The Concorde reconstruction project

The first ‘commercial’ British Concorde was G-BBDG. This was used for most of the certification work and was significantly different from the four prototypes 001, 002, 01 and 02. However, only the last seven were used by British Airways, and though at one stage DG might have been used commercially that never happened. Instead, it remained at Filton and was used for spare parts! The picture to the right shows how it looked until recently.
BBDG has been moved back to Weybridge - to the Brooklands museum. Not only does it need putting back together – about everything that could be taken off has been – it has had to be cut in places to allow it to be transported by road. All the parts that were taken off have been located. More details can be found on the website www.brooklandsconcorde.com
Our involvement

The task of rebuilding the aircraft is a huge one. Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering students are participating in rebuilding this unique aircraft, and the University is formally supporting the project. This project is, in fact, a unique opportunity as it will not be possible to get anything like as close to any other Concorde, let alone work on it, and to appreciate its systems which even by today’s standards are impressive. As an aircraft it remains unsurpassed.
