Facilities

The Department has extensive professional facilities housed in the purpose-built Performing Arts Technology Studios (PATS) which were opened in 1988.

These include:

  • Three professional recording studios and associated control rooms
  • Two sets of mobile recording equipment
  • An extensive range of professional microphones
  • Three audio editing suites
  • A listening room with surround monitoring equipped to the highest international specification (ITU-R BS 1116)
    an Audio and Electronics Laboratory for practical work
  • A good range of electronic and acoustic test equipment
  • Twelve practice rooms with pianos
  • A Steinway concert grand piano, a fortepiano, a harpsichord, a portable electronic organ, three drum kits, and a comprehensive set of percussion instruments
  • Two student multimedia computing rooms housing a number of networked Macintosh computers running Logic, Sibelius, Reaktor, Max/MSP, etc
  • A well-stocked audio room with scores, records, cassettes, CDs and playback equipment (located in the nearby University Library).
