Record-breaking building features graduate’s soaring soundtrack

The project to build the tallest building in Western Europe has brought together an array of former music and sound recording students, who together have helped ensure a little piece of Surrey is encaptured in The Shard.
Barbican Centre's PitLAB scheme

Tom Armstrong, lecturer and Programme Director in the Department of Music and Sound Recording, has successfully obtained a place on the Barbican Centre's PitLAB scheme. He will be using this opportunity to undertake development sessions for his new multimedia work, Athena and Arachne, from 11-13 February
Prof Tony Myatt, School of Arts - Artist in residency

Prof Tony Myatt, School of Arts, will take up an artists’ residency next week at the Snape Maltings in Aldeburgh, joining wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson in a project called In Britten’s Footsteps.

The results of the 2012 National Student Survey are in, and Surrey’s Music and Sound Recording programmes have performed phenomenally well, moving up 14 places to take a clear top place in the entire UK. Even with results of 98% for both Overall Satisfaction and Teaching, we’re working hard to repeat and improve upon this year’s success.

Movie fans are flocking to the cinema to watch Skyfall, the latest all-action James Bond mission starring Daniel Craig and Judi Dench. With a highly rated theme song by Adele, the legendary 007 ditty and an amazing soundtrack, the film is a real treat for the ears as well as the eyes.

Music
- Clive Williamson organised and ran the British Contemporary Piano Competition and was invited to teach and perform at Dartington International Summer School (one of the top international music programmes)
- Steve Goss has received a commission for a new Piano Concerto and the acclaimed guitarist, John Williams is performing Steve's Guitar Concerto with the English Chamber Orchestra.
- A recent graduate (2009) Finlay Dow-Smith (now called Starsmith) has had number 1 songs with Kylie Minogue and Cheryl Cole. For more info
Sound Recording
- Liz Ng: current national fencing champion
- Joe Yon: was mixing a range of current affairs programmes live on BBC radio 4 whilst still a student
- Iain Campbell: was signed to Island records during the course
- Scott Barnett, graduated this year, has worked on projects for Peter Gabriel, Beyoncé, Jeff Beck, John Leckie, Bernard Sumner, Hot Chip.
- Four Tonmeister graduates and two current students have been involved in the preparation for Peter Gabriel's "So - Back to Front tour. http://petergabriel.com/livedates/
- Graduates Pete Sene and Mark Claydon helped with preparation along with Placement students Nguyen Green and Olli Jacobs.
- Graduates Dan Lavi and Scott Barnett are helping out on the tour as keyboard tech and drum tech.
- Peter Gabriel has employed a Tonmeister placement student in his personal writing room at Real World Studios for 10 years.
New release from Professor Steve Goss

Steve was commissioned by Deutsche Grammophon to make 5 arrangements for guitarist Milos Karadaglic’s new album ‘Latino’. The album was released on 11th June and has occupied the No1 slot in the specialist classical chart ever since.
