Biography
Pauline fulfils three roles for the Department
- as Senior Professional Training Tutor for the four-year Music undergraduate course she tutors and mentors students during in preparation for, and during, their professional training year. Her teaching and tutoring interests include the infrastructure for arts support in Britain, arts administration and management, arts marketing, event promotion, and professional skills development and career opportunities for musicians. Her research interests are in continuing professional development, particularly in the use of reflection as a development tool for arts managers, and Action Learning Sets.
- as Performance Manager for the Department Pauline has overall management of the Department of Music and Sound Recording concerts and events.
- as Artistic Director of the biennial Guildford International Music Festival [next one March 2011] Pauline programmes, fundraises and manages the content and delivery of a wide range of artists and events. See www.guildfordinternationalmusicfestival.co.uk for the 2009 programme.
A background in music management and administration, including working with the Northern Sinfonia of England, and the National Association for Amateur Music, preceded life at the University of Surrey. Pauline has been a board member or trustee for several regional organisations and was chair of the audience development agency, Smart Audiences for 8 years.
Research Interests
Reflection as a tool for professional and organisational development in the subsidised arts sector.
Research Collaborations
In collaboration with Dr Sarah Houston of the Department of Dance, Film and Theatre, Pauline was awarded a Surrey Centre for Excellence in Professional Training Education (SCEPTrE) Fellowship to research reflection as a professional development tool for music and dance managers in the subsidised sector. A report of the first phase of this research is available, and work is on-going.
