One format only: 4-year Honours Degree: Music & Sound Recording BMus (Tonmeister)
aka The 'B' Course (cf the Music 'A', 'C' & 'D' Courses)
The Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) programme, established in 1970, combines Audio Engineering (the study of technical aspects of audio such as electronics, acoustics and signal processing), Music (including the option to take almost any subject from the straight Music programmes), and Sound Recording (learning how to make recordings and use audio equipment as well as making a wide range of recordings). We feel that these three areas are important to be a good music sound recording engineer, and also enable you to work in almost any area of the music and audio industries.
By balancing the importance of a rigorous academic study both of music and of the technical and scientific aspects of sound recording, with the operational and practical aspects of each, we have formed a blend of music and sound recording which, we believe, makes the Tonmeister programme unique in the British university system. The integrated Professional Training period will provide you with first-hand experience of working in the professional audio environment.
The programme aims to equip students with the breadth of knowledge required for successful careers in any professional audio field and in music. To this end, we have a very close relationship with our colleagues in Music to provide a level of musical education and experience which is at the highest academic and practical level. We have close professional relations with organisations such as the BBC, AMS/Neve, EMI/Abbey Road Studios, the Association of Professional Recording Services, and the Audio Engineering Society. Our excellent facilities include three purpose-designed recording studios with control rooms which are all comparable in quality to the best commercial installations.
The combination of Audio Engineering and Music may naturally lead to a career as a recording engineer, however the breadth of experience gained in the programme equips graduates with numerous practical skills and an invaluable sense of initiative and adaptability. This is why so many different fields of professional life welcome our graduates: television and radio engineering and production, pop and classical record production, equipment design, software engineering, audio systems maintenance, professional audio equipment support, freelance performance, teaching, lecturing, research (both academic and technical), arts administration, artist development, journalism and marketing.
