Undergraduate

Music and Sound Recording at Surrey offers four undergraduate single-honours degree programmes in music. Further information can be obtained by clicking on the appropriate course title.

Music (A Course) - W300

leading to BMus (Hons)

The A Course offers a wide range of academic studies (theory and analysis, history, and so on) as well as practical pursuits (performing, composing, conducting) and studies that combine the academic and the practical (orchestration, historical performance practice, etc.).

Music and Sound Recording (B Course) - J931 "Tonmeister"

leading to BMus (Hons)

The Tonmeister programme or B Course is aimed at those who are primarily concerned with the theory and practice of sound recording, but who also wish to develop their musical knowledge. By balancing the academic study of both music and sound recording with the operational and practical aspects of each, we have formed a blend that is unique in the British university system. The integrated Professional Training period will provide you with first-hand experience of working in pro-audio.

Music with Professional Placement Year (C Course) - W301

leading to BMus (Hons)

The C Course offers a similar wide range of academic studies as the A Course but focuses more on vocational studies, including the third year on professional placement.

Creative Music Technology (D Course) - W3G5

leading to BMus (Hons)

As well as providing excellent training in the musical application of computer technology, the D Course also explores a wide range of contemporary musical styles and genres. Modules cover areas as diverse as film music, popular music, synthesis and sampling, electroacoustic music, jazz, dance music, the music industry, and multimedia. This programme will prepare the student for a variety of career options.

Applicants for all courses should enjoy and find fulfillment in learning about music: as an undergraduate at Surrey you will spend considerable time studying, performing and listening to music in a wide range of styles.

In addition, a joint-honours degree is offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics:

Mathematics with Music - G1W3 (3 years) or G1WH (4 years)

leading to BSc (Hons)
