Scholarships and Prizes

In the Department of Music and Sound Recording we have various scholarships and prizes available.

Scholarships

  • The HR Taylor Trust Scholarship
    The HR Taylor Trust offers a range of valuable scholarships, from £1,000 to £3,000 per
    annum. The scholarships are open to Music and Sound Recording undergraduate students
    who intend to specialise in performance in the classical idiom. Auditions take place in at the
    beginning of the Autumn Semester. Students who win these awards are expected to take a
    significant lead in musical life, particularly in ensemble music making.
  • The Penningtons Scholarship
    This scholarship is worth £750 and is held for one year. It will be awarded as a result of
    auditions at the beginning of the Autumn Semester, to the most promising instrumentalist or
    singer in any musical style.
  • University of Surrey/Guildford Cathedral Organ Scholarship/Music Assistantship
    The Dean and Chapter of Guildford Cathedral offer an Organ Scholarship which may be
    combined with the post of Music Assistant in conjunction with the University of Surrey. The
    Organ Scholarship will normally be held by one person for one year. An extension for a
    further year may be possible. Applications need not be restricted to those intending to read
    music. The basic Organ Scholarship is worth £1500 per annum plus any extra fees.
  • University of Surrey/Guildford Cathedral Choral Scholarships
    The Dean and Chapter offer choral scholarships to male alto, tenor and bass singers in
    conjunction with the University of Surrey. Choral scholarships are normally tenable for three
    years, but this will depend on the University course. Those applying for undergraduate or
    postgraduate courses (in any subject) are eligible for consideration. The basic scholarship is
    £600 a year. When choral scholars have to be on duty out of semester, they are paid
    subsistence of £6 a day. There are also fees from occasional broadcasts, recordings,
    special services and some concerts.
  • Research Scholarships
    Each year the School tries to offer a limited number of research scholarships which generally
    cover all or part of the composition fees for tuition and occasionally a contribution towards
    maintenance. If you are thinking of staying at Surrey to conduct research, please contact
    the Research Administrator who will be able to explain the funding options available to you.

Prizes

  • The Croser Hughes Chamber Music Award
    A prize of £100, open to all undergraduates in Music and of Sound Recording, to be shared
    between the members of the best chamber music ensemble, as judged by an external
    adjudication in a concert in the spring of each year. A second prize may also be awarded at
    the discretion of the adjudicator.
  • The David Lovatt Music Composition Prize
    A fund of £500 to be awarded to the finalists of a competition within the Music and Sound
    Recording to write a piece for a professional ensemble (initially Gemini). The money being
    used to pay the costs for the ensemble rehearsing and performing the pieces. The winner is
    chosen by the visiting professional ensemble.
  • The Graham Smith Memorial Prize
    A prize of not less than £150 donated by the parents of Graham Smith, who graduated from
    Music in 1993 having specialised in composition and who died suddenly in 1995. It is
    awarded to the student submitting the best final year undergraduate composition folio.
  • The Joyce Dixey Award
    An award of £200 given by the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society in memory of the
    late Miss Joyce Dixey who was the Society's Secretary and General Manager, open to all
    students in Music and Sound Recording. It is awarded to the composer of the most
    impressive musical composition as judged in performance by an external adjudicator.
  • The Robert Naylor Memorial Prize
    A prize of not less than £120 donated by the parents of Robert Naylor, who died suddenly in
    April 1976 in his final year, awarded for the most meritorious BMus degree recital, or
    Tonmeister final performance assessment.
  • The Shoana M Mackay Dissertation Prize
    A prize of not less than £50 given by Mr Ranald Mackay, whose daughter graduated from
    Music in 1988, awarded to the student on the BMus (Music) programme who submits the
    best final-year dissertation.

Scholarships 

  • Choral Scholarships
    one or more, tenable for up to three years, offered in conjunction with the Dean and Chapter of Guildford Cathedral.
  • Organ Scholarships
    offered by Guildford Cathedral, tenable for up to three years.
  • Penningtons Scholarship
    £1,000 available to an undergraduate performer in year 1; the holder may be required to perform outside the University from time to time


NB...

  • Students will not be allowed to hold more than one scholarship at any one time. Scholarship-holders will be expected to take a leading part in the musical life of the Department, and to represent the Department at outside events.
  • Scholarships will be awarded by audition early in the Autumn Semester. A notice will be posted at the start of Freshers' week. Sign your name on this notice at the first opportunity. At the audition you should expect to play a piece of your own choice, lasting no more than 5 minutes. You may also be asked to play some technical exercises (sight-reading, scales, etc.).
  • Scholarship candidates need excellent musical ability (normally ABRSM Grade 8 with Distinction) in the appropriate area.
  • Tonmeister students are rarely able to become Organ or Choral scholars due to demands on time.

Prizes:

  • The AMS Neve Prize for Creative Recording
    A prize of £150 donated by AMS Neve plc awarded to the student on the BMus programme
    in Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) who submits the best final year tape folio.
  • The AMS Neve Prize for the Most Natural Sounding Classical Recording
    A discretionary prize of £75 donated by AMS Neve plc, awarded to the final year student on
    the BMus programme in Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) who produces the most
    natural sounding classical recording.
  • The APRS Jacques Levy Memorial Prize
    A prize of £250 donated by the Association of Professional Recording Services Ltd in
    commemoration of the Association's late president, Mr Jacques Levy, awarded for the best
    project submitted as part of the final year assessment of the BMus (Tonmeister) programme.

    the Level HE2 Tonmeister student whose overall mark in the May/June results has most

Chancellor's Scholarships 2012/13 

The University of Surrey has introduced merit-based scholarships, the Chancellor's Scholarships, to recognise exceptional academic achievement for the academic year 2012/13.

Our scholarships are available to those candidates who select the University of Surrey as their firm choice and they are open to home, EU and international students.
