Dance training

We support dance teaching through its programme of professional development activities. These include one-day courses, a four-day summer school and tailored in-service training provision. The programme is comprehensive but any specific needs can be catered for and suggestions for future courses are always welcomed.

Moving Art course

In collaboration with the Labanarium, we are running a Moving Art course that explores, in several stages, two of Rudolf Laban’s drawings from the archives.

In-service training

We run in-service training (INSET) programmes for teachers with a small team of qualified and practising teachers available to go into schools and colleges to work with teachers and students or host sessions at Surrey.

Our training will enable you to develop your programmes of study and resources for dance from KS1 to BTEC to A-level. The needs of both non-specialist and specialist teachers can be catered for in planning INSET.

Areas of support

Examples of areas where we can help include:

  • Introducing, planning and delivering GCSE dance or A-level dance
  • Help with set works for GCSE or A-level dance
  • Building knowledge of key areas of study
  • Devising duos and trios
  • Ideas for choreography at Key Stage 3
  • Help with delivering BTEC performing arts
  • Devising cross-curricular links and programmes of study
  • Introducing boys to dance
  • Teaching dance for the non-specialist.

Fees

Our INSET days are based on approximately five hours teaching and each is tailored specifically to the client’s requirements. The standard fee for one centre is £300 plus any travel, subsistence and accommodation expenses plus VAT.

We operate a sliding scale system for INSET days involving more than one centre and it is important that we are aware of all participants involved in the day. The fee increases to £400 for two centres and then by £50 for each additional centre. This can be split equally across participants.

Example of a previous course

Introduction to optional area of study - the independent contemporary dance scene in Britain 2000-current

This course aimed to give teachers a starting point for the area of study (AOS) The Independent Contemporary Dance Scene in Britain 2000-Current. Information covered on the day provided delegates with starting points for development of their own scheme of work. Key points in the specification were addressed with a practical and theoretical focus.

The day also included specific references to the specification and introduced the following:

  • What an area of study is
  • Development of the genre and its context – ways to get started
  • Ways to develop an analytical understanding of the AOS
  • Introduction to named practitioners and guidance on their selection and what to focus on
  • Resources for teachers and students.

Summer schools

We offer summer schools to help you prepare for teaching, network and refresh your practice, please contact us to make an enquiry: nrcd@surrey.ac.uk.

Previous summer schools have included an intensive week of training and networking, with a focus on KS3, GCSE and A-level dance and open level sessions which can be adapted to a variety of teaching contexts. Delegates attended for one day or up to four and were day or residential delegates.

As I’ve never taught GCSE before, the course was a wonderful way of networking, listening to the experience of others and working with the professional tutors. Previous attendee
