The impact of science on a climate of fear.

The popular perception of ionising radiation and its effect on life is far removed from reality. For example, radiation doses are accepted in clinical treatment that may be 10,000 times higher than those considered dangerous in the environment. How did we arrive at the current unbalanced view? What level of radiation dose should be considered as dangerous? And how might the cost and acceptability of new nuclear power stations be affected if safety levels were to be changed?
