Past and Present Students at Yale this Summer
Monday 6 September 2010
Experimental team lead by Prof Paddy Regan, at Wright Nuclear structure Lab at Yale University, USA working on the YTRASTBALL gamma-ray spectrometer August 2010.
The team is involved in a series of experiments unraveling the internal structure of the atomic nuclei with neutron number, N~50. This is a so-called Magic Number of neutron corresponding to a nuclear closed shell, who internal structure should be explained by simple, two-body nuclear interactions. The collaboration is made up from researchers from Surrey, Yale and The University of Richmond (Virginia, USA), led by Prof. Con Beasuang, who also holds a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey.
Current Surrey MPhys student, Phillip Goddard (middle of photo) is currently based at Yale for his MPhys placement. Also in the photo are current Surrey PhD students Mike Bowry, Mike Bunce, Tim Ross (collaborative with the Univeristy of Richmond) and Vassia Anagnostatou. Former Surrey MPhys student, Dr. Richard Hughes now a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Richmond is also shown. YRASTBALL is the most powerful university-based gamma-ray spectrometer in the world.
