Biography

Professor Clough did his PhD in Experimental Nuclear Physics at Queen Mary College London. He spent twenty years collaborating at particle accelerators both in the UK and round the world - in Vancouver, Los Alamos and Geneva - on experiments at the interface of Nuclear and Particle Physics. The last seventeen years or so he has worked at Surrey's own small accelerator developing totally novel applications of nuclear reaction analysis to diffusion in materials. These have been used to study a broad range of systems such as the inter-diffusion and surface segregation in polymer films, diffusion of shampoo into hair and the correlation of water ingress and drug egress in drug-release polymers. Currently he is studying the diffusion of chlorine and sulphur into cementitious materials, the diffusion of water into polymers (using both an external in-air and an in-vacuo scanning microbeam) and the mass and size distribution of gold micron-sized flecks in a foam cylinder used as a target for a high power laser complex.

Research Interests

Ion beam analysis of diffusion in materials.

Research Collaborations

NANOCEM collaboration with several European Universities and Cement -based PLCs;related Marie Curie student/RA  exchange programme.

Consultancy collaboration with AWE on measuring gold suspended in a foam cylinder.
