Biography
Born in rural South Australia in the year of the Melbourne olympic games, the family quickly decided he would never be a farmer and so they moved down to Adelaide. After completing Honours in Physics at Adelaide, specialising in Cosmic Rays, he travelled to Oxford as a Commonwealth Scholar in the year that Virginia Wade won Wimbledon. He joined St Catherine's College and embarked upon his PhD studies in nuclear spectroscopy. He returned to Australia as a Queen Elizabeth II Fellow in the year of George Orwell and worked at the Australian National University in Canberra. In 1990, he returned to the UK to join the faculty in Surrey.
Research Interests
I am interested in the coexistence between mean-field and cluster structure in light nuclei, and the effects of extreme deformations and proton-neutron imbalances on their nuclear structure. My work involves experimental studies, principally with radioactive beams and in particular the beams from the facilities at GANIL/SPIRAL in Normandy, France and TRIUMF/ISAC2 in Vancouver, Canada. The main focus at the moment is on the very neutron-rich neon and sodium isotopes, which exhibit Magic Numbers that are different from stable nuclei (this is due to the interactions between the protons and the additional valence neutrons). Similar studies will be extended to the magnesium and calcium isotopes, at the most neutron-rich limits accessible with present day beams. The primary method of investigation is to bombard deuterium targets with radioactive beams and to study events in which the beam picks up a neutron from the target, populating new quantum excited states. We also use complementary methods to study the above isotopes, such as neutron removal reactions. We have also extended these neutron "knockout" reactions to study the much lighter beryllium isotopes, which exhibit a rich variety of molecular, cluster, halo and Borromean structure as we look away from the stable isotopes and again we can study the disappearance of traditional Magic Numbers in nuclei that approach the neutron drip line.
Research Collaborations
I set up and lead the TIARA collaboration (which includes groups at Daresbury, LPC Caen (France), West of Scotland, Liverpool, and Birmingham). This collaboration is studying nucleon transfer reactions with radioactive beams, using the TIARA array together with EXOGAM detectors and the VAMOS spectrometer. Since 2007 TIARA has collaborated strongly with the MUST2 collaboration in France, for joint studies of nucleon transfer reactions with ISOL and fragmentation beams. This work, and connected work at GANIL, TRIUMF and elsewhere form the main part of my present research. Since 1991 I have also worked as part of the CHARISSA collaboration in the UK, where we study molecular clustering and halo structures in light nuclei. Other recent research at GANIL has included nucleon removal knockout reactions studied experimentally with radioactive beams.

Abstract
Background: To understand explosive hydrogen burning in stars and to explore various explosive scenarios such as type I x-ray bursts (XRBs), reliable reaction rates are needed. The cross sections for radiative proton capture on near-dripline nuclei are necessary for the determination of the reaction rates, but cannot be measured directly. Purpose: To determine the reaction rate for the radiative proton capture reaction 23Al p γ 24Si using indirect methods and, as a consequence, evaluate if sequential 2p capture on 22Mg seed nuclei is significant at high temperatures. Method: Nonresonant radiative proton capture on 23Al is investigated using the one-proton breakup of 24Si at 61 MeV/nucleon and the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) for 24Si →23Al+p is deduced. Results: From the ANC, the nonresonant component of the astrophysical S-factor for the 23Al p γ 24Si reaction is determined and, using other new experimental data the resonant component is re-evaluated. Conclusions: The 23Al p γ 24Si reaction is of interest for type I XRB nucleosynthesis and its reaction rate can affect both the 22Na abundance and the total energy output. New determinations of the rates for the 22Mg p γ 23Al p γ 24Si reaction chain are provided here and we point to the need that they be included in XRB scenarios. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Abstract
The quenching of the N=20 shell gap in neutron-rich nuclei is investigated by studying the single-particle structure of 27Ne via neutron transfer using a 26Ne beam. Two low-lying negative-parity intruder states have been observed, the lowest of which is identified as Jπ=3/2−, confirming earlier speculations. A level identified as 7/2− is observed higher in energy than the 3/2−, contrary to the ordering at β-stability and at an energy significantly different from the predictions of previous shell-model calculations. The measured energies and deduced spectroscopic factors are well reproduced in full (0,1)-ℏω 0s-0p-0d-1s-0f-1p calculations in which there is a significant ad hoc reduction (∼0.7 MeV) in the N=20 shell gap.

Abstract
Measurements of the 4He(7Be,α)7Be and 4He(7Be,p)10B reactions were performed using 7Be beam energies of 7.1 and 23 MeV and a helium-4 target, employing the thick target technique. Resonances were observed between Ex(11C)=8.6 to 13.8 MeV. An R-matrix analysis was performed to characterize the spins and partial widths. This analysis showed that the observed sequence of states was consistent with that found for 7Li + α resonant scattering populating resonances in 11B. A comparison of the proposed partial widths for decay with the Wigner limit indicates that several of the states are associated with cluster-like structures.

Abstract
We propose to install a storage ring at an ISOL-type radioactive beam facility for the first time. Specifically, we intend to setup the heavy-ion, low-energy ring TSR at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN, Geneva. Such a facility will provide a capability for experiments with stored secondary beams that is unique in the world. The envisaged physics programme is rich and varied, spanning from investigations of nuclear ground-state properties and reaction studies of astrophysical relevance, to investigations with highly-charged ions and pure isomeric beams. The TSR might also be employed for removal of isobaric contaminants from stored ion beams and for systematic studies within the neutrino beam programme. In addition to experiments performed using beams recirculating within the ring, cooled beams can also be extracted and exploited by external spectrometers for high-precision measurements. The existing TSR, which is presently in operation at the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, is well-suited and can be employed for this purpose. The physics cases as well as technical details of the existing ring facility and of the beam and infrastructure requirements at HIE-ISOLDE are discussed in the present technical design report. © 2012 EDP Sciences and Springer.

Abstract
We discuss the use of one-nucleon removal reactions of loosely bound nuclei at intermediate energies as an indirect method in nuclear astrophysics. The breakup reactions are proved to be good spectroscopic tools and can be used to study a large number of loosely bound proton- or neutron-rich nuclei over a wide range of beam energies. As peripheral processes, they can be used to extract asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs) from which non-resonant capture reaction rates of astrophysical interest can be calculated parameter free. In this talk, we present results of a proton-breakup experiment carried out at GANIL (France) with a cocktail beam centered around 23Al at 50 MeV/nucleon. Momentum distributions of the breakup fragments, inclusive and in coincidence with gamma rays detected by EXOGAM Germanium clover array, were measured in the focal plan of SPEG energy-loss spectrometer. We present in particular the investigations of reaction rates for 22Mg(p,γ)23Al and 23Al(p,γ)24Si important for novae and X-ray bursts, respectively.

Abstract
Heavy neutron-rich nuclei were populated via relativistic energy fragmentation of a E/A=1 GeV 208Pb beam. The nuclei of interest were selected and identified by a fragment separator and then implanted in a passive plastic stopper. Delayed rays following internal isomeric decays were detected by the RISING array. Experimental information was obtained on a number of nuclei with Z=73-80 (Ta-Hg), providing new information both on the prolate-oblate transitional region as well as on the N=126 closed shell nuclei.

Abstract
The occurence of ``exotic'' shapes in light N = Z α-like nuclei is investigated for 24Mg+12C and 32S+24Mg. Various approaches of superdeformed and hyperdeformed bands associated with quasimolecular resonant structures with low spin are presented. For both reactions, exclusive data were collected with the Binary Reaction Spectrometer in coincidence with EUROBALL IV installed at the VIVITRON Tandem facility of Strasbourg. Specific structures with large deformation were selectively populated in binary reactions and their associated γ-decays studied. The analysis of the binary and ternary reaction channels is discussed.

Abstract
The breaking of the N=8 shell-model magic number in the 12Be ground state has been determined to include significant occupancy of the intruder d-wave orbital. This is in marked contrast with all other N=8 isotones, both more and less exotic than 12Be. The occupancies of the [FORMULA: SEE TEXT]orbital and the [FORMULA: SEE TEXT], intruder orbital were deduced from a measurement of neutron removal from a high-energy 12Be beam leading to bound and unbound states in 11Be.
