Masters Degrees
The Department has been providing high quality MSc programmes for over thirty years. In the 2009/2010 academic year we have a record number of MSc students, over 100. These are split between our 4 MSc courses. In addition to our one-year MSc courses, we also now offer two-year Euro-Masters MSc's. These are especially aimed at students looking for a UK based postgraduate education in a European format. The course mixes classroom based study and hands-on research training, and includes opportunities for exchange via e.g Erasmus / Socrates / SEPnet (South East Physics Network).
Our MSc courses are:
MSc in Medical Physics
Our Medical Physics MSc trains medical physicists; many of our UK students are sponsored by and go on to work in the NHS. The course is fully accredited by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM). It includes hands-on training in local hospitals as well as lectures on campus delivered both by Surrey academics and by practising hospital-based medical physicists.
MSc in Radiation and Environmental Protection
Radiation and Environmental Protection is a well-developed science concerned with maintaining and improving environmental quality in the face of increasing technological activity. The Surrey MSc aims to provide a thorough grounding in radiation protection and to show it is applied in industry and its relation to the broader field of environmental protection. The substantial practical element of the course enables the student to relate taught material to its real-world applications.
Students from the REP and RDI programmes visited Nuvia Ltd at Harwell, where they toured a decomissioned nuclear reactor. The reactor is managed by Research Sites Restoration Ltd.
MSc in Radiation Detection and Instrumentation
The MSc in Radiation Detection and Instrumentation was introduced by the Department in 2008 to address the needs of postgraduate training in detector physics, radiation instrumentation, and radiation detection applications. Nuclear detector technology and instrumentation are widely used across a range of application areas, including medical physics, various security fields, the nuclear industry and environmental monitoring, plus physics research areas such as high energy physics, nuclear physics and astronomy. This course is designed to give a complete grounding in the essential aspects of detection and instrumentation, plus the most recent advances in the field.
MSc in Medical Imaging
The MSc in Medical Imaging is run jointly by the Departments of Electronic Engineering and Physics. It is aimed at those with a first degree in a numerate subject wishing to pursue a career and/or gain further knowledge in the area of medical imaging and image analysis. Medical imaging is a rapidly growing discipline within the healthcare sector involving clinicians, physicists, computer scientists and those in the IT sector. The growth is fuelled by the rapid development of 3D medical imaging systems and a matching exponential rise in computing power.
EuroMasters MSc
New for 2009, the department is offering a 2-year full time EuroMasters degree in Physics, a Bologna-compatible European postgraduate degree that awards 120 ECTS credits over 2 years. Students taking the EuroMasters programme attend taught modules from physics MSc programmes in Year 1, followed by a full-time research project in Year 2. The research programme can be carried out either at Surrey, or at one of our regional partner institutions. A limited number of 2-year EuroMasters studentships are available.
