cii - The Centre for International Intervention

Welcome

cii is a multidisciplinary centre based at the University of Surrey in Guildford in the UK. We aim to reclaim the idea of international intervention as a universal human responsibility to offer protection and assistance to vulnerable people on the basis of our common humanity. We use the lower case acronym, cii, to differentiate what we mean by international intervention from the more conventional association with military force.

The aims of cii are twofold:

1. To adopt a critical approach, which seeks to question and critique dominant understandings and practices of intervention.

The first aim seeks to open a space in which the second aim can be realised:

2. To provide a forum for debate, in which marginalised voices and those on the receiving end of interventions are heard.

The new centre aims to be inclusive of perspectives from those at the receiving end of intervention, relevant in policy terms, and open to participation from a range of disciplines including, for example, film, engineering, bio-medical science, psychology, and law, amongst others.

Co-Directors:

Professor Sir Michael Aaronson

Professor Marie Breen-Smyth
