Academic Activity A:
How we decide: the complexities of decision making, by Dr. Maxine David
Decision-making is a key aspect of political life and therefore the study of politics. This session will begin with a brief lecture, outlining some of the insights of key decision-making scholars, with a focus on Irving Janis's work particularly. Following this, prospective students will be asked to work in increasingly large groups in order to solve a problem. At the end of the session, students will be asked to share their impressions of the groupwork and to comment on its effectiveness. All participants will gain some insight into the complexities of the decision-making process – as well as the type of learning environment fostered by the University of Surrey's Department of Politics.
Academic Activity B:
The Discourse of Rights and humanitarian intervention, by Dr. Mark Olssen
In this lecture Prof. Olssen will provide an overview of the development of the discourse of rights, from the 17th century to the 21st century. The significance of the rights concept will then be discussed in terms of how it affects topics in international relations such as humanitarian intervention.
