When the Past is Present: the Casualty, the Body and Politics
Thursday 8th March, 18:00 to 19:30, LTL
On International Women's Day, Professor Marie Breen-Smyth will give her inaugural lecture with Lord Alderdice FPCPsych acting as the introductory speaker.
Abstract
Accounting for casualties of armed conflict provides a way of counting the human cost of war, supporting or undermining claims to victimhood, victory or human rights violations. However, not all casualties die: many are maimed, disabled and continue to live in a divided society, often in close proximity to those who injured them, their bodily injuries and scars a continual reminder of past violence. Based fieldwork in Northern Ireland, and paying particular attention to gender, Professor Breen-Smyth considers the implications of including those injured in measurements of the costs of conflict for designing processes of societal reconciliation.
