Academic Activity B: LECTURE
The Vices and Virtues of Nationalism by Prof Chris Flood
Contrary to optimistic expectations, the end of the Cold War did not usher in a more harmonious international order. Instead, it opened a period of instability and tensions which have sometimes led to wars. Among the most important factors contributing to this uncomfortable state of affairs has been the (re-)emergence of various forms of nationalism on every continent of the world, disrupting the internal dynamics of a number of established states and generating or sharpening international disputes. This talk defines different forms of nationalism and, with the aid of examples drawn mainly but not exclusively from Europe, considers both the destructive and the constructive aspects of the phenomenon.
