Topic: The Female Combatant: Intersection of Gender Paradigms?

My thesis explores how far the female combatant represents an intersection between the gender paradigm of hegemonic masculinity, manifest in the institution of the military, and the normative gender paradigm of ‘femininity’, which projects women as essentially peaceful. The thesis seeks to explore the dynamics of the contending gender identities of masculinity and femininity that women joining the military  are compelled to confront in the process of becoming a combatant. I draw on the British military as a case study to develop the argument.
