Research Interests

My research focuses broadly on the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy from both an EU and Member State perspective. In particular I work on the following:

  • German and Polish Security and Defence Policies
  • The European Defence Agency and Permanent Structured Cooperation in Defence
  • EU Crisis Management Operations
  • Strategic Culture

Research Collaborations

- UACES CRN - CSDP Strategy

I along with my co-collaborators (Prof. Sven Biscop – EGMONT, Brussels, Dr. Jocelyn Mawdsley - University of Newcastle and Dr. Petar Petrov - Maastricht University) were awarded £5000 by the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) to convene a CRN looking at the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy and strategy. The CRN aims to critically assess the EU’s role in security and defence, the term ‘strategy’ and what this implies analytically, the extent to which some form of strategy already exists or is feasible, and what the key elements of any future CSDP strategy and the connected military and civilian capabilities might be. The CRN will run from 2012 to 2015. We will be convening three workshops, one of which will take place at Surrey, as well as participating in a number of conferences over the next three years.
