Our research focuses on citizenship and civil society, and on the role people play in political and policy processes, how active and engaged citizens can ‘make a difference’ in their communities.
Our academic and research staff are engaged in international quality research, demonstrated by a 5 in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and publish regularly in journals and books.
Our research areas include European Politics, International Politics, Political Participation, Citizenship and Political Psychology and Media and Political Representation, for a comprehensive breakdown of these areas please see our Research Areas page or Research Areas of Staff for details on our academic's specific interests, for details of individual's publications please refer to our 'People' page.
We are home to two research centres. The Centre for Research on Nationalism, Ethnicity and Multiculturalism (CRONEM) which hosts a regular seminar series, as well as an annual conference and the Centre for International Intervention (cii).
Our Politics Research Seminar Series provides a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge research papers and acts to increase awareness among our students about developments in diverse themes of research in the field of international politics today. Details of past and future research seminars can be found on our events page.
We are actively engaged in a number of high profile conferences. Drs Tereza Capelos, Maxine David, Roberta Guerrina and Simon Usherwood acted as academic convenors for the 61st Political Studies Association Annual Conference (April 2011, London).
Our PhD programme is recognised as eligible for funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the main funding body for the social sciences in the UK. This means that PhD students in the Department are able to apply to the ESRC for research funding.
