English Language Support
Studying for a postgraduate degree will probably mean that you need to develop new skills to help you get the most from your programme. If English is not your first language, you may find these new skills particularly challenging. The Department of Languages and Translation Studies offers an English Language Support Programme (ELSP) to all students at the University of Surrey.
Our aim is to help you achieve your full potential, enjoy your programme and gain experience in different ways of thinking and learning. You will be working with enthusiastic and friendly members of staff who are experts in English for academic purposes. Our tutors will help you to develop a critical and reflective approach to your studies.
From the moment you arrive, and throughout your time at Surrey, we will be available to give you advice and support. This support is free of charge.
Help to Suit You
ELSP can help if any of the following apply to you:
- You would like to boost your confidence by improving your English language skills
- You have language difficulties which might affect your academic performance
- You want to improve your study skills
- You need advice on how to approach your written assignments
- You find it difficult to follow your lectures and take notes at the same time
- You are preparing to write your dissertation or thesis
- You have never studied in the United Kingdom before
English Language Support is available for all Surrey students, not just speakers of English as a second or foreign language. Many native English speakers also benefit from the courses that we offer.
Further information can be found on the Languages and Translation Studies page.
