Blood protein clue to combating heart disease

Dr Karen Swales has discovered how a protein that occurs naturally in the blood could be harnessed to help protect against heart disease. Results of the study were published in the journal Cardiovascular Research.

The protein, called pregnane X receptor, or PXR, helps activate mechanisms which keep blood vessels supple and uncongested. Dr Swales said: “Our discovery has major implications for the prevention of heart and cardiovascular disease, the UK’s biggest killer.”
