PhD studentships in Fields, Strings, and Geometry

The School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Surrey is inviting applications for PhD positions in the Fields, Strings and Geometry research group.

Start date

1 April 2023

Application deadline

Funding information

Full UK tuition fees and a tax-free stipend. This project is on offer in competition with a number of other projects for funding.

About

The members of the group have research interests across a variety of fields including but not limited to:

  • Black holes
  • Fluid dynamics
  • Geometric analysis
  • Integrability
  • Supergravity
  • Brane solutions
  • Gauge/string dualities
  • Higher structures
  • M-theory
  • Twistor geometry.

For full details about the group, please visit the Fields, Strings, and Geometry Group.

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic group with an excellent international reputation and a lively community of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. The members of the group have extensive collaborations and links with other research institutions from around the globe.

As a PhD student in the School of Mathematics and Physics you will work as part of a vibrant and supportive community of early career researchers who exchange ideas and collaborate with each other and the mathematical community. You will be extensively trained for a career as a professional mathematician, which will set you on the right track for a future in academia, industry or government.

During your PhD you will also receive a comprehensive training in transferable skills such as project management, communication and time management through our Faculty Graduate School. In addition, you will broaden your mathematical horizons by taking courses via national networks such as the national MAGIC consortia as well as our own in-house MSc course.

Funding

Full UK tuition fees and a tax-free stipend. This project is on offer in competition with a number of other projects for funding. This opportunity may be available with partial funding for overseas fees for exceptional applicants. However, funding for overseas students may be limited and applicants are encouraged to find suitable funding themselves. The University of Surrey provides funding for Fields, Strings and Geometry PhD studentships. In addition, typically one of the research studentships offered per year in the Fields, Strings, and  Geometry group is supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council, which distributes public money to train PhD students at UK universities.

Applications for all studentships are made to the University of Surrey.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants should have:

  • A minimum of a first class honours degree in mathematics, physical sciences or engineering.

Preferably applicants will hold:

  • A MMath, MPhys or MSc degree, though exceptional BSc students will be considered.

How to apply

Applications can be made through our PhD Mathematics course page. In your application you must mention this studentship in order to be considered.
