Biography
I graduated from Kent with a degree in electronics in the late 70s and after a short lived easy option job at Marconi on Tornado avionics (design) escaped these shores and headed to the Sahara and Col Kadaffi's Socialist Peoples's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. Having left the clutches of an organised career I lived in a makeshift camp 600Km south from the coast enjoyed the freedom of bimbling along the wide open expanses of desert tracks in an Ex-WD M type Bedford (sometimes an R type Bedford), assisted by two locals, occasionally blowing things up is a seemingly random manner. Picking up skills which would come in useful later, how to sign my name in Arabic, fix a Bedford diesel engine and navigate by stars it all came to a untimely end when the Americans dropped some bombs on Tripoli and it seemed a good idea to leave. To help develop my skills in cutting edge electronics there followed work in Angola (during a war) Italy, Spain, Norway, then onto the Wessex Institute of Technology for a spot of mainframe computing using Fortran77.
Departmental Duties
I design, build and repair electronics, mechanical, electrical equipment for various people and projects. I book out the bookable labs and some equipment.
I do the PAT testing, all the electrical equipment in Psychology need to have a valid electrical safety test.
I keep and issue the keys to various Psychology rooms, am the Phone Rep so deal with ordering and installing landline phones, updating the phone directory, getting phone/network sockets enabled.
I, and others, deal with printer and copier problems and decide if the contract engineer is required for any repairs
