My primary research interests are focused on young people, race, ethnicity and nation. In particular, my work examines:
   • National and ethnic enculturation
   • The identifications, cultural practices and acculturation of ethnic minority, mixed-heritage and ethnic majority individuals
   • The development of prejudice, stereotyping and intergroup attitudes
   • The development of intercultural competence
   • The development of political cognition, civic attitudes and active citizenship

I am especially interested in the use of cross-national comparative studies to examine variability in the development of young people as a function of the specific social, political and national contexts in which they are living. I recently coordinated a cross-national research project funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme entitled Processes Influencing Democratic Ownership and Participation (PIDOP). This project examined the processes influencing civic and political participation in eight European states (Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey and the UK). The project drew on the disciplines of Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Politics, Social Policy and Education, and focused on the macro-level contextual factors (including historical, political, electoral, economic and policy factors), the proximal social factors (including familial, educational and media factors) and the psychological factors (including motivational, cognitive, attitudinal and identity factors) which facilitate and/or inhibit civic and political participation. The research examined young people, women, minorities and migrants as four specific groups at risk of political disengagement, and developed a set of detailed policy recommendations for enhancing levels of participation among these groups .

In the past, I have coordinated two other cross-national research projects, the CHOONGE and NERID projects, which were funded by the European Commission and by INTAS respectively. Together, these two projects investigated the development of national and ethnic identifications, beliefs and attitudes in 6- to 15-year-old children living in England, Scotland, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Spain, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The main findings from these two projects are reported in my 2007 book, Children's Knowledge, Beliefs and Feelings about Nations and National Groups.

I have also recently completed two other research projects. One of these was a multidisciplinary project funded by The Leverhulme Trust on New Ethnicities in British Bangladeshi and Mixed-Heritage Youth. This project examined patterns of national and ethnic self-categorization and identification among British Bangladeshi and mixed-heritage adolescents living in London, the cultural practices of these individuals within different situations and contexts, and their perceptions of multiculturalism, racism and discrimination.

The other recently completed project is a Council of Europe project in which a new educational instrument called the Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters (AIE) has been developed for use within primary and secondary schools. The AIE is intended to support and encourage the development of the attitudes, skills and knowledge which are required for engaging in positive and effective dialogue with people from other cultural backgrounds. The AIE was piloted in sixteen countries in 2007-8, and was published by the Council of Europe in March 2009. In a follow-up project for the Council of Europe, the team is currently developing a second educational instrument called the Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters through Visual Media, also for use within primary and secondary schools. The AIE(VM) is intended to support and encourage the development of the attitudes, skills and knowledge which are required for deconstructing images of cultural others encountered in visual media such as television, cinema, the Internet, magazines, newspapers, etc. In addition, I am contributing to the Council of Europe’s Pestalozzi Programme, helping to develop teaching and learning resources for use by students, teachers, teacher trainers and other education actors in the areas of  intercultural education, education for linguistic and cultural diversity, and education for democracy. I have also recently written a statement paper on intercultural competence for the European Wergeland Centre (a partner institution of the Council of Europe).
