On graduating from the course they will be eligible to apply for high intensity psychological therapy posts. They will be qualified to deliver NICE-compliant psychologies therapies to individuals with common mental health problems, including depression and anxiety disorders.
Research Methods in Psychology
Want to do research in psychology? Want the skills to be able to work across levels of explanation from group behaviour, to qualitative analysis of individual experiences, through to the underlying brain activity? The MSc Research Methods in Psychology, at the University of Surrey, gives you a uniquely broad training because you cover the theory and get hands on experience of conducting research in psychology from the level of social groups through to neuro-imaging of brain activity. The programme is designed to provide students with expertise of psychological research methods including formulating research questions, conducting empirical research and analysing and reporting research results. Students can tailor their programme to alter the balance between social, experimental and neuroscientific research approaches.
Social Psychology
Studies human action, emotion, cognition, and discourse. As social psychologists, we understand human behaviour to be inseparable from its social context. Novel, surprising creative explanations of the ways that people are, as the anthropologist Michelle Rosaldo put it, ‘social beings first, and individuals only second.’ Social Psychology addresses these issues drawing on classic and contemporary research, engaging students with a diverse range of methodological practices as well as the course team’s various professional skills.
Supervision & Consultation: Psychotherapeutic & Organisational Approaches
The course is aimed at senior qualified professionals, including applied psychologists, registered psychotherapists, health and social care employees, educationalists and human resource personnel. All those undertaking the course should be regularly supervising others and consulting to staff and organisations. Trainees on the programme will come to the University campus for theory teaching and group work, and we will visit them in their workplace to supervise their live supervision/consultation practice.
