M21 Assessment and the Workplace
Aims and Learning Outcomes
This module aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and understanding of theory and practice in accordance with two of the eight Level 1 British Psychological Society competencies that are prerequisite for Chartered Status. Specifically the competencies addressed are: ‘Personnel Selection and Assessment’ (Section 3 of the BPS criteria) and components 1-4 of ‘Performance Appraisal and Career Development’ (Section 4 of the BPS criteria).
By the end of this modules students are expected
- to be knowledgeable about the informed and systematic application of the research-practitioner model involving the in-depth analysis and conceptualisation of practical issues underlying workplace assessment taking into consideration (a) the wider social, economic and political context (b) legal imperatives [e.g. Equal Opportunities] and (c) micro-political and ethical sensitivities
- to be able to develop skills in job analysis, criterion development and the design and application of techniques of assessment for selection and performance appraisal
- to be able to develop the basic interpersonal, technical and communication skills required for the effective design of assessment strategies, methods and techniques for purposes of selection and performance appraisal.
- to be equipped with knowledge and skill in support of their completion of Level A (Ability) and Level B (Personality) Certificates of testing as independently assessed by a registered British Psychological Society accreditor.

Required Prerequisite Study
None.
Completion Requirement
Completion of the module (and the acquisition of 15 course credits) requires a total of 20 contact hours in the form of lectures and seminars. Students are also required to invest a minimum of 100 hours of study time in completion of the module. Please note that it is a course requirement that students are enrolled onto Ulearn (the University’s virtual learning environment); further reading, course exercises and assignments will be made available on-line and electronic discussion groups will also feed into self-, group- and tutor- assessment.
Assessments
Assignment 1 will constitute of the write up of selection case study (50 % of the final mark) and assignment 2 of an academic essay (50 % of the final mark)
