M24 Training, Development and Workplace Counselling

Aims and Learning Outcomes

This module aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and understanding of theory and practice in accordance with three of the eight Level 1 British Psychological Society competencies that are prerequisite for Chartered Status. These competencies are ‘Training’ (Section 6 of the BPS criteria), components 4.5 & 4.6 of ‘Performance appraisal and career development’, and components 5.1-5.6 ‘Counselling and personal development’.

By the end of this modules students are expected

  • to be trained in the informed and systematic application of the research-practitioner model involving the in-depth analysis [using conventional methods, techniques & tools] and integrated theoretical formulation of commonly encountered individual and organisational problems requiring training, development and workplace counselling interventions.
  • to be knowledgeable about practice in the design of training, development and workplace counselling interventions at a strategic level taking into consideration:
    a) the wider social, economic and political context
    b) legal imperatives [e.g. Equal Opportunities] and
    c) micro-political and ethical sensitivities.
  • to be able to develop the basic interpersonal, technical and communication skills required for the effective analysis and formulation of problems in connection with training, development and workplace counselling, and for the effective design, implementation and evaluation of domain-relevant interventions.
  • to be able to self-reflect in support of personal and professional development using a range of self-assessment tools.

Required Prerequisite Study

None.

Completion Requirement

Completion of the module (and the acquisition of 15 course credits) requires a total of 20 contact hours in the form of lectures and seminars. Students are also required to invest a minimum of 100 hours of study time in completion of the module.

Assessments

Assignment 1:
Conduct a single, initial career counselling interview. Write a report discussing this case. The report will critically draw on relevant literature and apply it effectively to the individual case. (Word limit: 2,500 words). (50% of the final Mark).
Assignment 2:
Design and deliver a ten minute mini-training course (Pass/Fail).
Based on this training course, write a report outlining the rationale and justification for the training course design. This report will critically draw on relevant literature and apply it effectively to the instructional design. (Word limit: 3,000 words). (50% of the final Mark).
