M60 Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Health Psychology

Aims and Learning Outcomes

To provide students with knowledge and understanding of methods, theory and practice of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) used in Health Psychology.

At the end of this module students should be aware of the principal tools, theories, methods and ethical issues of CBT when used with patients with a chronic illness

  • Be familiar with Beck’s Theory of CBT
  • Be familiar with the CBT Style of Communication
  • Understand the role of assessment and formulation in CBT
  • Have an awareness of interview methods and the goal setting approach
  • Be familiar with principles of methods used to change behaviour and cognition
  • Have an understanding of the issues people have when facing death and other realistic hopeless situations

Completion of the module (and the acquisition of 15 course credits) requires a total of 20 contact hours in the form of lectures and seminars. Students are also required to invest a minimum of 130 hours of study time in completion of the module.
