Core Philosophy
The core philosophy at the heart of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Psychology Practice at the University of Surrey is a reflective-scientist-practitioner model of training and professional practice in health psychology. Thus, we believe that the effective application of health psychology is best achieved through evidence-based practice and through the development of health psychologists who are both reflective-practitioners and scientists. We aim to enable students to develop advanced competencies through:
- providing effective training in the theories, methods, and practical skills applicable to health psychology practice;
- developing self-reflective practitioner skills;
- providing a supportive learning environment with supervision and mentoring from an experienced Chartered Psychologist and Health Psychologist.
The Programme recognises the importance of peer-support in developing these competencies and aims to provide an environment in which students are able to learn from each other. We believe that the future of health psychology depends on high quality science in combination with the effective application of the evidence-base to healthcare settings. The PhD Programme ensures that students develop their abilities to conduct high quality, independent, and original research and contribute to the evidence-base of health psychology. The Postgraduate Certificate in Health Psychology Practice ensures that students have the advanced knowledge base, practitioner skills, and competencies to apply their understanding of health psychology effectively.
