Dora Brown

Research Tutor
Dora Brown obtained her BSc (Hons) from Roehampton Institute (Surrey) in 1997 and her PhD from the University of Surrey in 2002. Since then she has held research positions within the occupational section of the department of psychology, acted as a lecturer in the undergraduate and postgraduate programme and has held a post as a research tutor within the clinical team. All her posts have been located here, at the University of Surrey. Her research and publications have been mainly in the areas of self, identity and qualitative research methods. Her most recent funded research focuses on learning and teaching in Clinical Psychology, and the application of the reflective practitioner model within the PsychD courses.
Research interests
Research into self and identity construction and evaluation processes in groups of people with mental health problems such as brain injury, pain, self-harm, depression and Asperger’s Syndrome. Qualitative research methods. Training issues and the development and evaluation of methods of teaching professionals to adopt a reflective practitioner model.

Pierre Cachia

Pierre Cachia is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with full membership of The Division of Counselling Psychology and Registered Psychotherapist. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of Malta where he later continued his professional training in Counselling Psychology. Subsequently, Pierre completed training to post-graduate diploma level in Gestalt Psychotherapy, Family Therapy (systemic) and Psychotherapy Supervision. He is currently enrolled on the Professional Doctorate in Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships (TCCR) in London.
He runs a private practice where he sees individuals, couples and families in Surrey and also works as a freelance clinician in London. Prior to moving to the UK, Pierre served as a Council member of the Maltese Psychological Association serving as its PRO for a period of five years. He is a founding member of the European Association for Counselling Psychology.

Professional and research interests
Couple psychotherapy, male psychology, gender issues and gender role dysfunction, the impact of relationships on well-being and mental health, working with relational violence and abuse, attachment theory and supervision.
Riccardo Draghi-Lorenz

Course Director & Lecturer
Riccardo Draghi-Lorenz is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and a Developmental Psychologist. He holds the course’s directorship and runs a small private practice in London. He obtained the equivalent of a BSc in Psychology and an MSc in Experimental Psychology at the University of Rome, a Postgraduate Diploma in European Psychology (with a focus on research methods) at the University of London, and completed a PhD in infant Psychology at the University of Portsmouth. He completed a four year postgraduate eclectic course in psychotherapy, with a focus on Transactional Analysis, at the Institute of Training and Research for Educators and Psychotherapists in Rome. In London he did a one year course in advanced psychotherapy theory and supervision with Petruska Clarkson, at Physis. His research interests include the early development of the self-conscious emotions such as pride, shame, jealousy, 'schadenfreude' and empathic concern; the nature of intersubjectivity; the early development of interpersonal awareness, interpersonal skills and of the self; the role of emotions in relationships and communication.
Research Interests
Complex emotions, awareness of self and other, empathy and social understanding in the first year of life and in the therapeutic relationship.

Maureen Luden

Professional Tutor
Maureen Luden gained her MSc in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy from Middlesex University/Metanoia Institute and her C.T.A. (Certified Transactional Analyst) in Rome from the European Association for Transactional Analysis. She also has a Diploma in Humanistic Counselling from Roehampton Institute. For over ten years she trained with and was supervised by Petruska Clarkson at Physis. Maureen works integratively drawing from the Humanistic, Psychodynamic, CBT and Clarkson’s 5-Relationship models. She is also a qualified holistic aromatherapist. Maureen has worked in a variety of counselling/psychotherapy settings within the NHS and in Counselling Services. Before joining the team in the psychology department, Maureen worked as a Counselling Co-ordinator for a substance misuse service where she offered training and supervision for Volunteer Counsellors. She also worked in a multidisciplinary team at a London University Hospital where she ran therapeutic groups. She has a private psychotherapy practice. Maureen is a trilingual practitioner working in English, French and Spanish.

Martin Milton

Senior Lecturer
Martin Milton gained his BA from the University of Natal (Durban), his BA(Hons) from the University of South Africa, his MA from the School of Psychotherapy & Counselling at Regents College and his DPsych from City University, London. As well as his appointment with the University, Martin runs his own practice as a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist. Martin is also a BPS registered Psychologist specialising in Psychotherapy (with Senior Practitioner status) and was until recently Consultant Psychologist in Psychotherapy in the NHS. He is a professional member of the School of Psychotherapy and Counselling at Regents College. Martin has been involved in the Division of Counselling Psychology, the Lesbian and Gay Psychology section, co-edited the section journal, “Lesbian & Gay Psychology Review” and now sits on the International Advisory Committee. He is consulting editor for "Counselling Psychology Review”.
Research Interests
Political dimensions of psychotherapy; lesbian and gay affirmative psychotherapy; existential psychotherapy, evolutionary theory and ‘eco-therapy’.

Natalia Pliakou

Lecturer
Natalia Pliakou is a BPS Chartered Psychologist, an HPC registered Counselling Psychologist and a member of the Society for Neuroscience. She obtained her BA (Hons) in Psychology from the American College of Greece where she also specialised in Experimental Psychology and associative/non-associative learning phenomena. Subsequently, she obtained an MA (Highest Distinction) in Psychology & Behavioural Neuroscience from Boston College where she researched the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie maternal behaviour in rats. She then completed her PsychD Practitioner Doctorate in Psychotherapeutic & Counselling Psychology at the University of Surrey where she primarily researched the emotional possibilities between male therapists and female clients. Natalia has worked for psychological services in the public and private sector and is a bilingual practitioner working in English and Greek.
Research Interests
Emotional possibilities and relational processes in therapy; father-daughter relationships and their effects on daughters’ psychosocial development within a patriarchal context; neuroscience and psychotherapy; maternal behaviour, or lack of, and implications for women.

Tommi Raisanen

Professional Tutor
Tommi Raisanen is a chartered individual and group psychotherapist. He received Bachelor of Psychology degree at the University of Malta and became a Gestalt Therapist through GPTIM in 1999. He completed an MSc in Psychodynamics of Human Development following the Jungian analytical stream at the Birkbeck College and gained his MA in Gestalt Psychotherapy from London Metropolitan University. Recently, he gained a diploma in systemic family constellations. Previously, Tommi has worked as a tutor in an international experiential learning organisation. Since 2001, he has been employed as a psychologist, part of the primary care team in HM prison service. He also has a private psychotherapy practice in London.
