Course Fees

The fees for the 2012/2013 academic year are as follows:-

Home Students £6,870
Overseas Students £15,535

Trainees are required to fund their personal therapy, professional indemnity insurance, and any additional supervision they might choose to have.

Trainees will also be expected to pay their travelling expenses to and from placements.

Please note that candidates who are offered a place on the course will be required to pay a deposit of £500 on accepting the place.
This will be deducted from the tuition fees payable on admission.

Grants and Loans

At present there are no University grants or scholarships for this course although it may very occasionally be possible for some third year placements to be paid.

Career Development Loans are available from local banks for UK and EEC students. Overseas students should obtain information about loans from their respective government departments. They can also contact the British Council for possible help.

NB: Candidates should be reasonably confident that they can secure adequate funding before applying for the course.

Closing date for applications

The closing date for applications for entry in September 2013 is 1 February 2013, after which a short list for interviews will be drawn up. Late applications will not normally be considered due to the short time scale and volume of applications received.

Interview Dates

Interviews for entry to the course in September 2013 will be held during April 2013.

All short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a panel consisting of the course officers and will be required to complete a written exercise and participate in an observed group discussion.

Applicants should be aware that trainees will be subject to checks by the Criminal Records Bureau during the course of their training and that some Trusts will require trainees to complete successful occupational health checks prior to seeing clients.  In light of this we encourage disclosure of health issues at an early stage so that we can think together about managing any particular issues or challenges that the trainee may face.

Applications are encouraged from members of all sections of society.

Career Prospects

Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Psychology is an expanding area of professional applied psychology. Counselling psychologists work in a variety of settings including GP practices, community mental health teams, clinical psychology departments, voluntary agencies, social services, private practice, higher education, etc.

Significant numbers of our graduates have found employment as counselling psychologists, employed on an equivalent basis to clinical psychologists.

Facilities for students with special needs

The University welcomes applications from all Special Needs Students.

We positively encourage all students to disclose their special needs at the earliest possible opportunity to allow us to assess the provision required to enable students to receive appropriate and effective support throughout their course.

We strongly recommend that applicants with mobility difficulties, visual impairments or hearing impairments visit the campus well ahead of the date of their proposed entry, to ensure that they have all the necessary information and advice to enable them to decide whether Surrey is the right University for them. This provides a real opportunity to assess the facilities and accessibility. Visits can be arranged through Additional Learning Support or the Department to which applicants are applying. If appropriate, every effort will be made to arrange a visit for the same day as a formal academic interview.

There are especially adapted rooms or flats in three of the Courts with some provision for an on-site carer. Also some students with medical reasons may be eligible for a room on campus throughout their entire course.

Special examination arrangements can be organised. This requires completing an application form and providing supporting evidence to the Additional Learning Support. Forms are available from us.

Car parking is at a premium at Surrey. However, there are a few orange badge holders bays on campus mainly located near the Library or by Senate House where badge holders can park free. As the campus is built on the side of a hill we recommend you contact us and we can advise you on possible routes around the campus in order to avoid steep slopes.

The Disability Advisor works in partnership with students to develop the level of support needed including advice on:

  • Funding (e.g. Disabled Students Allowances)
  • Learning support arrangements (e.g. exam and assessments)
  • Liaison with school/tutors/accommodation services
  • Equipment sources
  • Organisations and support services
  • Awareness training
  • Learning Support Arrangements (learning support tutorial, examinations, assessments)
