Covering a wide range of individual specialisations, the European Politics Group builds out from questions of identity and belonging, into the relationship between national and European polities at the theoretical, institutional and policy levels, and then into questions of European foreign and security policy and the role of the European Union as an international actor.

The research in the Group focuses on cross-cutting issues such as: human rights and humanitarianism; nuclear non-proliferation; security and defence; and foreign policy analysis. The work on the politics of international intervention, looking at key drivers of foreign policy such as post-conflict reconstruction and stabilisation is particularly innovative. We also have a number of area specialists who have expertise in particular regions of the world.
Political Psychology, Public Opinion and Political Communication
Dr Tereza Capelos

Research in the Group focuses on the political psychological determinants of political decision making, and the dynamics of public opinion. The principal areas of inquiry involve the role of affect and political emotions on voter preferences and issue support, political ideologies, mythology and values, reputation management, political scandals, accountability, and blame attributions. We also specialize in public opinion and electoral behaviour, party politics and party patronage, campaigns and elections, and citizens’ impressions of parties and their leaders. This team also conducts research on nationalism, political tolerance, and political cynicism.
