Who Should Consider This Programme?
The programme is designed for anyone involved in making decisions that have financial repercussions within an organisation. This includes those who do not have an accounting and finance background, those with an accounting and finance background that would like to update their skills as part of their continuing personal and professional development and the growing band of entrepreneurs that would like to keep a more diligent eye on the financial development of their business. It is suitable for both private sector and public sector managers. Candidates should have several years of management experience to benefit fully from this programme.
Aims
The programme demystifies the key issues in accounting and financial management to:
- Reveal what the balance sheet and income statements are telling you
- Understand key issues such as costs, budgeting, investment appraisal and drivers of corporate value
By the end of the programme you will feel comfortable with the figures which represent the fundamental strengths of a business or project and will understand how to use the key drivers of value for your business.

These tools will enable you to read the key accounting and financial management figures and understand what they are telling you about your decisions and your organisation. You will gain new insights which benefit you and your organisation.
Programme
The programme is delivered over 5 days at Surrey Business School in the heart of the University of Surrey campus at Guildford. Each day’s learning is guided by specialists in the field. The emphasis is firmly placed on practical application of the key concepts and will feature a combination of presentations, case studies and group work allowing you to develop the skills to apply this knowledge directly into your workplace.
Programme Leader
Dr Andrew Mason

Andrew gained more than 20 years hands on experience in the financial sector prior to returning to academia. Industry roles included Economist and Investment Strategist at leading investment banks Nomura (Japanese) and Citicorp (U.S) before moving into investment management. Andrew held senior investment management roles at leading pension funds including USS (UK), and Philips (Europe).
He has analysed and invested in thousands of companies over the years, with responsibility for billions of pounds. The practical application of financial strategies remains his main interest.
