Shaping the Agenda on Enterprise and Innovation
Monday 5 November 2012

Enterprise and Innovation are now recognised as key drivers of sustainable organizations – from corporate giants to new start-ups. Surrey Business School continues to build on its reputation as a centre of management expertise with its latest round of recruitment targeting world-leading business academics who will shape the research agendas in their fields.
Head of Surrey Business School (SBS) Professor David Goss underlined the importance of continually anticipating the market: “It’s our job to ensure students leave us fully conversant with the issues facing business leaders at a global level, that we arm them with the practical tools to tackle those challenges, and with the intellectual confidence to respond innovatively to an uncertain environment”.
Professor Alan Brown, who joins us as Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, will be working to strengthen our links to business via a focus on innovation practices. Before coming to Surrey, Alan was a Distinguished Engineer at IBM Rational software, most recently holding the post of Chief Technology Officer for Europe.
Likewise, Dr Jos (Johannes) Jansen will also be developing SBS’s expertise in entrepreneurial innovation, teaching and researching on entrepreneurial planning and open innovation. Jos joins us from the University of Cologne.
Professorial Research Fellow Professor Thomas Reutterer, will split his time between his role at SBS and a post at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna) where he is Professor of Marketing and Head of the Institute for Service Marketing and Tourism. He will be working with colleagues in the Retail and Marketing Group to extend our innovative research in retail management.
Joining us from the University of Reading is Professor Gavin Hilson, Chair of Sustainability in Business. Gavin is a leading global authority on the environmental and social impacts of the African small-scale mining and the extractive industries. He will lead our work on internationally sustainable business development.
An expert on efficiency, risk, and regulations in the banking and insurance industries, Dr Fotios Pasiouras has taught at numerous institutions including the University of Bath, EADA Business School (Spain)and the Hellenic Open University (Greece). He previously held a number of senior research posts including Consultant to the Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD).
Professor Manthos Ntelis comes to SBS as Professor of Financial Economics and Banking. His primary expertise is in the field of performance, efficiency and market power of the banking sector. He has held posts at the University of Ioannina and, most recently, Cass Business School. In December 2009 he was included in the list of IDEAS as one of the top one hundred young economists in the world.
Before joining Surrey, Joanne Jia was a Lecturer and Tutor in Accounting and Finance at The London School of Economics. She holds an MSc in Management from the University of Oxford, and an MPhil and PhD in Finance from the University of Cambridge. She has also worked as Strategic Advisory (M&A) at Dresdner Kleinwort Investment Banking.
Lecturer in Marketing Dr Evmorfia Argyriou joins the University of Surrey from King’s College, London and Aston Business School. Evmorfia gained her PhD from Warwick Business School, and her subsequent research has included marketing communications and consumer psychology.
The work of Surrey Business School’s academics goes hand in hand with our enterprise outreach projects within the regional business community, including our recently announced sponsorship of the Toast of Surrey’s Young Business Award 2013.
