Biography

I am a Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour in the Surrey Business School. My research is currently focused on the role of intuitive judgement in decision making and organisational learning. My research has been presented at major international conferences, received awards, and has been published in peer-reviewed management journals.

I obtained my PhD from the University of Surrey. In my doctoral research I have undertaken an extensive fieldwork with the senior management teams of police organisations in the UK to investigate their use of intuition in strategic decision making and organisational learning processes. Subsequently this work led to further research into police operational decision making (law enforcement) in emergency response situations. I have been awarded the University of Surrey's Researcher of the Year Award (2010) for significant contribution of my doctoral research.

My previous career experience includes business development in the finance sector and project management in non-governmental organisations. I hold a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Economics (Canada) and a master's degree in International Business Management (Surrey).

Research Interests

My research is currently focused on managerial decision making and organisational learning, specifically on the role of intuition in decision making.

My research interests and expertise centre on the following areas:

Decision making; intuitive judgement; cognition; organisational learning; organisational development; change management; top management teams; creativity and innovation management.

    Abstract

In this historical review we chart the progress of intuition research over the past eight decades. We highlight the distinction between intuition research in management and intuition research in base disciplines and related fields, and offer a critical commentary on the ways in which the dynamic between these two historical threads has affected progress in the study of intuition in organizations. We conclude by identifying several promising new directions for intuition research, and offer a number of recommendations to intuition researchers in management which may help in taking this topic forward in ways that do not recapitulate previous errors, diversions or digressions.
