Junior University

In order to help young people understand more about life at university, the University of Surrey offer a number of workshops and activities on campus as well as visits to schools directly. However, the majority of this activity has been aimed at students within Secondary Schools. What increasingly concerns us is that we are finding that for many young people, even in the first stages of their Secondary education, this intervention is too late since many have already decided not to consider Higher Education as an option for them.

As a result, the University decided to run a project with some local Primary Schools called ‘Junior University’. The project itself is aimed at all students in Year 6. There are currently two different activities that are offered to Primary Schools:

Maths Challenge – Variety of maths and puzzle based games. The session is supported by undergraduate students and its aim is to encourage students to use different mathematical and analytical skills as well as have some fun.

Gory Science – A gory science practical session where students will view a demonstration and take part in four mini practicals of a biological theme to do with the body. Session supported by undergraduate students.

Each session will also include:

• What’s Life Like At University – Talk and slideshow from current undergraduates based around ‘a day in the life’ of a couple of students. Very light touch, but is really enjoyed by Primary students. The sessions end with a small quiz based on what was seen in the slideshow.

• Lunch – A packed lunch is provided by the University eaten in one of the University’s restaurants.

• Campus Challenge – Tour of the University and its facilities based on a treasure hunt where pupils following clues.
