A number of Web-based software applications - such as Google Maps, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter - offer certain ways, via an Application Programming Interface or API, to develop yet other Web-based applications. New Web applications that incorporate such base applications have been referred to as "mashups".
Our Web Mashups workshop provides examples of how to develop new Web-based software by combining existing applications. This can involve the combination of images, videos, games, maps, and other kinds of data. The workshop offers hands-on experience of creating applications using Google Maps, and an appreciation of creating readily shareable photo albums. The approaches involved can be extended to the use of applications such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and so on.
