Engineering

Welcome to the Engineering Taster Class

This web page gives you an opportunity to discover how powerful engineering can be. Engineering is about finding practical solutions to challenging problems and involves hands-on experience as well as theory, these taster classes are designed to give you both.

If, after you have experienced all this webpage has to offer and you are still interested in engineering and learning more than become a member of IMechE engeneration for FREE!

What is Engineering?

Engineering is the driving force behind human intellectual evolution. Pulleys, levers, and wheels are fundamental concepts of engineering which have existed since ancient times. Engineers apply scientific principles to the production of almost every man made object. Even simple objects such as chairs, doors, and cups have been engineered to provide us with useful, safe and enjoyable products. Engineers find solutions to overcome daily problems encountered in life.

The two most common engineering sectors in the UK are the Aerospace Industry and the Automotive Industry.

Engineering has gone through four main revolutions, the Pre-scientific revolution, Industrial revolution, Second revolution and Information revolution, which is today’s computer and mobile phone devices. The evolution of engineering started in BC6000, with items such as, the first boat, and the first wheeled vehicle. The Institute of Mechanical Engineers has a heritage website where you can learn more about the vast engineering timeline.

Interviews with Engineers

There is nothing better than to listen to engineers talking about their experience and enthusiasm for engineering. Find out how they got to where they are and be inspired to become an engineer.

Find out what they studied, why they would like to become an engineer and what the challenges they face are.

Student Activities

Have you ever thought “what makes an aircraft fly”? Engineers need to design and create things to solve problems. Download these fun activities to get some hands-on experience and a feeling of what engineering really is.

Model Glider - Student Handout (711.84KB - Requires Adobe Reader) Composite - Student Handout (780.97KB - Requires Adobe Reader) Model Car - Student Handout (754.8KB - Requires Adobe Reader)

Watch the videos below for great tips on how to launch your model glider. And check out the Aerodynamics session (HL) to learn more about flight

Challenges

Engineers sometimes are required to think out of the box to design and create something that stands out from the crowd. These challenges are designed to expand upon the activities above. Students are required to use their imagination and their knowledge to create innovative solutions.

Composite Challenge (275.89KB - Requires Adobe Reader) Model Car Challenge (288.66KB - Requires Adobe Reader)

Teachers Guide

This web page is also designed to help teachers or educators to promote engineering to students. The Teachers Guide helps the educator guide their students through the activities.

Model Glider - TG (2441.5KB) Composite - TG (1734.5KB) Model Car - TG (2259.5KB)
