Languages

Welcome to Languages

We are keen to foster links with local schools and colleges in order to encourage the uptake of languages at GCSE and A level and beyond. We are happy to visit schools and talk about the importance of languages and provide information about studying languages at degree level. As well as visiting schools and giving presentations, there are three main areas of activity:
• Languages in Education module (second year degree option)
• Promoting positive language uptake in schools by hosting events at the University e.g. sixth form events, languages days and visiting schools and colleges
• Updating existing learning resources for schools

You can also find out more by visiting the School of English and Languages

Languages in Education
Second year languages students have the option of taking a module which prepares them for a brief teaching experience at local schools. They undertake preparatory work at the University followed by hands-on activities teaching in front of a class at a secondary school in conjunction with the schools’ languages staff.

Promoting positive language uptake in schools
We try to play an active part in encouraging the uptake of foreign languages at school.  This may take the form of hosting a languages day for Year 8/9 pupils or an after-school event for sixth formers to give them a feel for what it would be like to study a language at University.

For details of future events, please see the events calendar.
